White Oak

White oak's heartwood is a light to medium brown with an olive hue. Quartersawn slabs display prominent ray fleck patterns traversing a very straight grain. Flatsawn oak (shown here) has some straight grain mixed with meandering cathedrals. It has a coarse, uneven texture often containing various small knots. Its rustic appearance makes it great for warm earthy furniture. White oak was the material of choice for much of the opulent interior millwork a century ago from the many Brooklyn brownstones to the Vanderbilt mansions of NYC and Newport, RI.
