Black Walnut

American black walnut is chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Its color often has a subtle purple or reddish hue which comes from years of air drying. Its sapwood is nearly white and is mostly discarded. Walnut has a medium texture with knots of varying sizes that add to its natural character. The grain is usually straight with large cathedrals, but can often include various swirl patterns. Walnut can occasionally be found with figured grains such as curly (irregular flame like patterns), crotch (from where main trunks branch out), and burl (extra growths typically found at the base of a tree). These patterns are often found in patches throughout the boards and give areas a beautiful iridescent quality.
