PIET HOUTENBOS

Piet began his career at Modernlink, one of Manhattan’s premier purveyors of mid-century modern masterpieces. It was there, designing the award-winning Onelink collection, that he developed his understanding of proportion, and the ideals of modern design.

Piet founded Singular Products in 2004. The company began with the wild success of the Hand Grenade Oil Lamps, expanding over the years to include a variety of objects as well as a collection of ideas in modern furniture design. These early furniture prototypes became the foundation of Piets work today.

His motivation lies in finding the inevitability of each design, that is, to unearth beauty and purity in the solution of a problem in a way that becomes immediately relatable. He finds inspiration in all of humanity’s creative endeavors, and especially enjoys the works of early innovators. His work often encapsulates a moment or aesthetic idea from the past but presents it in a modern context.

Piet’s work has received much critical acclaim, and has found its way into the homes of fashion, photo, and film icons, as well as the homes of New York MoMA curators of architecture and design.

Piet received his BFA in Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001. He lives and works in New York City, where he was born and raised by Dutch parents.

Furniture Design Studio

The furniture studio is dedicated to exploring the principles of timeless modern furniture design and expanding its lexicon with a distinct and independent point of view. Crucially, it's the concept of 'a point of view' that enables modernism - with all its simplicity - to flourish endlessly through the endeavors of independent designers working today.

Each piece the studio produces is the result of a rigorous focus on design, detail and purpose. Often revised over time until the techniques feel virtuous and the design seems inescapable. With thoughtful deliberation the studio is empowered to create works that exude simplicity yet require skill and human artistry.

The studio is committed to producing its work to the highest levels, employing exceptional materials and techniques to craft enduring furniture to be used through generations.
